Doug Hjelm, age 56 of Osakis died Tuesday, June 3 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud. Friends and family are invited to attend the visitation hours from 11:00 - 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 7 at the Roy-Hetland Funeral Chapel in Osakis. A private memorial service will be held for family.
Douglas Morris Hjelm was born on July 8, 1951. Morris and Rae (Hurst) Hjelm raised him on their family farm outside Canby, MN. Doug attended Canby Public Schools, where he graduated in 1969. After graduating from high school, Doug enlisted in the Air Force. He was honorably discharged on June 15, 1975.
Doug welcomed his first son, Matthew in 1972 while he was stationed at Nellis Air Force base in Las Vegas, Nevada. Doug returned to Minnesota after he was discharged and settled in Osakis, MN. Doug next celebrated the birth of his only, daughter, Carrie Ann in 1976. In 1980 Doug announced the birth of his second son, Adam. Doug worked for Alexandria Beverage Company for many years. He left the beer business to start his own business with a friend cleaning beer lines. After a couple of years, Doug was bought out and he then tried his hand at farming part time by raising hogs. Doug also started a family milk delivery business, which his son, Matthew took over and ran for a while. In 1993 he went into farming full time at his ranch, The Lonesome Dove, where he resided until his death.
Doug was an avid sportsman, loving ice fishing and deer hunting the most. He loved his motorcycles, western movies and going to town for breakfast or an ice cream cone every now and again. He had many health issues in the last ten years, but battled through them. He was a loving son, a good friend, a cafe' chum and a storyteller from way back. He never forgot his roots or his family. He was "Bumpa Moo-Moo" to his grandchildren. Doug was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Osakis Sportsman Club and belonged to the Osakis VFW Post #7902.
He is survived by his children, Matthew Hjelm, Carrie Ann (Hjelm) and husband, Jason Mounsdon and Adam Hjelm, all of Osakis; his parents, Morris and Rae Hjelm of Madison, MN; his sisters, Deb (Hjelm) Jones and her special friend, Gail Swart of Osakis, Peggy (Ed) Schindler of Granite Falls, MN; the lights of his life were his two grandchildren, Riley and Averie Mounsdon of Osakis, his godparents, Donovan & Delores Peterson of Dawson, MN and his best friend, Robert (Rachel) Martin of Superior, WI; six nephews and many cousins. Lastly, he will be remembered by his large and loving extended family of friends.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents.
Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren, Riley and Averie Mounsdon, his goddaughter, Jamie Schmidt and his lifelong friends, Dale Husbyn, Robert "Uncle Bob" Martin and Charles "Schmitty" Schmidt.
Arrangements were handled by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis, MN.
