Fern Giesler, age 81 of Osakis passed away on Friday evening, Dec. 15 at the Community Memorial Home in Osakis, MN.
Fern Lavonne Vanderlinden was born on September 23, 1925 in Clear Lake, South Dakota to Henry and Della (Johnson) Vanderlinden. As a young bride of 17, Fern married Harold Giesler on May 8, 1943 in Sioux Falls, SD. They farmed near Walnut Grove, MN near his family farm and then moved to a farm in North Dakota for six years. They returned to Walnut Grove in 1958 and then moved to Chandler, MN four years later. When they retired from farming, the Giesler's moved to a home on Lake Osakis.
Fern was a member of the United Methodist Church in Osakis and also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary while living in Chandler. Fern was an excellent cook who always kept a delicious supply of baked goodies on hand for any family or friends who would stop to visit. She also enjoyed doing craft projects, especially ceramics and crocheting. In the summertime, she could be found working out in her garden or out on the lake catching fish. She was a kind and loving mother, grandma and sister who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Harold, Jr. (Lynette) Giesler of Osakis, Myron (Carol) Giesler of Jasper, MN, Duane (Christine) Giesler of Mankato, Curt Giesler of Osakis, Della (Mark) Haupert of Lake Wilson; 12 grandchildren; 28 great, grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Giesler of Osakis; her sister, Laura Carlson of LeCenter, MN; many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, Harold, Sr. in '96; 2 sons, Gary and Allen Giesler; 5 sisters, Velma Wahl, Nellie Cole, Mariah Vanderlinden, Violet DeSmith and Luella Zens.
Funeral services were held for Fern on Monday afternoon at 3 pm at the Osakis Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Bateson officiating. Musicians were organist,Janet Sampson and soloist, Dana Hetland. Interment was at the West Evergreen Cemetery in Osakis. Casketbearers were her grandsons, Corey, Chad, Jeff, Mike and Wade Giesler and Brad Haupert.
Arrangements were handled by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis, MN.
