Life History for George Hoium
George Hoium, age 85 of Alexandria, formerly of rural Villard passed away on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014 at his home in Alexandria after a short battle with leukemia.
On August 23, 1929 a son was born to Carl and Anna (Ronnie) Hoium in New Prairie, MN and they named him George Emil. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith on September 29, 1929 and confirmed on May 16, 1943. He attended country school in Cyrus and then went to the Villard school through the eighth grade. On January 2, 1954 George married the love of his life, Fay Zarbok. They were the first couple married in the newly built St. John's Lutheran Church in Villard, MN. George and Fay began farming south of Westport when they were first married. In 1957 they moved to what is now known as the 'Hoium Farm' by Villard. George retired from farming in the fall of 2002, but continued his passion for farming by helping Lonnie until August of 2013. George was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Besides his love of farming and country life, George enjoyed snowmobiling, playing cards and dancing. He was very proud of his grandchildren and faithfully attended all of their sporting or stock car racing events. He was their number one fan. He also enjoyed watching basketball and westerns on television.
George enjoyed life and it showed when the family could hear him singing while in the barn milking and also in the fields. Songs we remember him singing are "The Auctioneer," "Good Ol' Mountain Dew" along with many other tunes. One of George's highlights was talking and singing in Norwegian to his grandkids.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Fay Hoium of Alexandria; a son, Mark Hoium and a daughter, Melody Faber; daughter-in-law, Cindy Hoium; 7 grandchildren, Michael (Toni) Velde, Brett (Sam) Hoium, Derek Hoium, Kyle Hoium, Ashlee Faber (Cory Abers), Jenell Faber and Cody Faber; 2 great grandchildren; a brother, Curtis (Margaret) Hoium; many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Lonnie Hoium in February of 2014; a brother, Ervin Hoium and four sisters, Cora Peterson, Mildred Sanvig, Verna Bartos and Adeline Mauseth.
