Life History for Gladys Smith
Gladys Smith, age 101 of Osakis, went to her Heavenly home on Ash Wednesday, March 9, 2011 from her residence at the Knute-Nelson Nursing Home in Alexandria, MN where she had lived for the past eight years.
Gladys Marie Severson was born on June 14, 1909 in Kaduka, South Dakota, one three children born to Andrew and Christina (Peterson) Severson. After her primary schooling, Gladys took additional training to receive her teaching certificate and then taught school for many years. On August 9, 1941 she was united in marriage to Ira Smith in Kaduka, South Dakota. In the mid 1940's, the Smith's moved to Osakis, MN as the new owners of the Empress Theatre. Gladys & Ira soon endeared themselves to the townspeople and especially the many families and children that frequented the theatre. They were also loved by the many local students that they employed at the theatre over the years. The Smith's always made certain to show only the best family films available. For over thirty years they operated the Empress, many during those frugal years when it was only a dime to see a movie!
Gladys was a member of the Osakis Lutheran Church and belonged to the Rebekah Circle. She also was a past member of the Eastern Star.
Some of her hobbies included sewing, embroidery work and cross stitch. She had beautiful penmanship and wrote many letters. She also was an avid reader and life-long learner who loved children, drives around the lake and social time at the local eateries. She was a big supporter of the Osakis Public School and attended many plays, concerts and sporting events. Many will remember visiting with Gladys and how she would always find a way to include her favorite little sentiment "O bless your heart," in to every conversation. She was a loved and respected member of the Osakis community who will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Gladys is survived by her neighbors, church family, caregivers and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ira in 1982, two step children; a sister, Lila and a brother, Lloyd Severson.
Interment is next to her husband at the Lakeside Cemetery in Osakis. Arrangements by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home,Osakis, MN.
