Life History for Harley Anderson
Harley Anderson, age 90 of Osakis passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, MN.
Harley was born on March 6, 1924 in Osakis, MN to Andrew and Minnie (Swanson) Anderson. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Osakis and attended rural school District 33 through the eighth grade. As a boy, Harley was active in 4 H at both the local and county levels. After graduating from Osakis High School in 1941, Harley served his country in the U. S. Navy, being stationed in San Francisco, Seattle and then Guam. After his honorable discharge in January of 1946, Harley returned home to marry his sweetheart, Marvel Maus just one month later on February 10, 1946 at the Osakis Lutheran Church. He also returned to his job at the local Post Office. In 1953 Harley was assigned a rural mail carrier route and joined the MN Rural Letter Carriers Association, serving as President of Area 4. He was also an active member of the Osakis Lutheran Church, serving over the years as Secretary, Trustee and Treasurer on the Church Council.
Harley was in several bowling leagues over the years, but his favorite hobby was playing horseshoes. He was in many leagues and tournaments, winning two world trophies. He enjoyed partnering with his good friend, Don Enger of Osakis for several years. He was also active in the horseshoe league in Mesa, AZ where he wintered, and took first place in a league that had 400 players! In addition to bowling and horseshoes, Harley also enjoyed going hunting and fishing. In 1992, his 1 lb., 11 A½ oz. sunfish would have made the state record book for that year had he entered it. Many pleasurable hours were also spent each year with the Maus families going out fox hunting with hounds. He also was a skilled wood carver.
He is survived by his two daughters, Judy (Karl) Schoeler of Apple Valley, MN and Kathy (Bill) Ludenia of Brainerd; two grandchildren, Kirsten (Tony) Pederson and Keith Schoeler; 2 great grandchildren, Kourtney and Daniel Pederson; a brother, Leonard Anderson of Fairmont, MN; several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife, Marvel in 2001 and a brother, Kenneth Anderson.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, September 29, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Osakis Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Reisig officiating. Inurnment is at the Lakeside Cemetery with honorary bearers being Norm Ellingson, Don Enger, Mike Wegener, Howard Swenstad, Bud Manders and Glen Barber.
Arrangements are being handled by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis, MN.
