On the Feast Day of Guardian Angels, Herb Grundman met his own Guardian Angel when he entered his new life on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 from his home in rural Osakis, MN at the age of 84 years.
On March 29, 1934 a son was born to James H. and Magdalena (Jennissen) Grundman in Sauk Centre, MN. They named him Peter Herbert Grundman, but he became known as Herb at an early age. He graduated from Osakis High School with the Class of 1952 and was united in marriage to Marilyn Hansen on May 4, 1955 at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, MN. They would spend the next 63 years together, raising their family of eleven children and farming in Orange Township, south of Osakis. They instilled in their family a strong work ethic and together they operated a very successful dairy and crop farming operation. Herb loved working the land and even through this past year was able to farm. Once retired from daily farming however, Herb and Marilyn enjoyed spending winter months in Mesa, AZ with the many friends they made there. Herb was a member of the Immaculate Conception parish in Osakis and belonged to the St. Michael’s Knights of Columbus Council # 3176, having served as Grand Knight and also as a faithful Navigator for the organization. He became a member of the 4th Degree Knights and attended many fraternal functions, continuing to be a strong supporter of his local Council.
Herb loved to socialize and enjoyed being with people. He was a sports fan who faithfully cheered for the MN Vikings. Taking up golf in later years, Herb learned to love the game and valued the many friendships he made playing league golf in both Osakis and Arizona. Herb took great pride in his family and all of his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a strong, hardworking, devotedly Catholic husband, father, grandpa and brother who will be dearly missed. Blessed be his memory.
He will live on in the hearts of his family, especially his wife, Marilyn of Osakis; his children, Jim (Ruth) Grundman, Osakis, Cathy (John) Winters, S. Centre, Tom (Kasey) Grundman, Osakis, Teresa (Dan) Meyer, S. Centre, Fr. David Grundman, Elrosa, Peggy ‘Toots’ (Dave) Becker of Osseo, WI, Sandy (Mike) Moritz, St. Michael, Linda (Larry) Keenan and Judy (Rudy) Cazeao, all of Austin, Marilou (Pat) Exner and Jennifer (Randy Rodgers) Grundman, all of Mpls; 39 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; siblings, Harold Grundman of Alexandria, George (Barb) Grundman of Florida, Mary Christensen of Lakeville; many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents and sisters, Audrey Grundman, Magdalene Dean and Carole Fogarty.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis with Fr. David Grundman and Fr. David Petron officiating. Readers are Luke Grundman and Marie Felling. Cross, scripture and gift bearers include Patrick Moritz, Josh Becker, Judy Cazeao, Marilou Exner and Jennifer Grundman.
