Life History for Jim Nomeland
James 'Jim' Nomeland, age 89 of Osakis entered the peace of Heaven on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, MN.
On December 9, 1921 in Redwood Falls, MN, Andrew and Ella (Johnson) Nomeland welcomed a new baby boy into their family. They named him James Knute Nomeland. He grew up in Canby and graduated with the Class of 1939. He attended Normal School in Canby and taught country school for a year. Jim then traveled to Seattle, WA and was employed by Boeing, where he worked on airplane wings. He served his country during WWII in the Army Air Corp. He was trained as a cryptographer, doing decoding work. He was stationed for a time in Hawaii and the Ellice Islands. After 39 months in the armed service, Jim was honorably discharged and returned to complete his education at Luther College in Decorah, IA. He received an AB degree and went to work in Minneapolis at ERA. His next job brought him to Osakis to work at the First National Bank of Osakis, where he eventually became vice president. On February 20, 1954 Jim married Lorraine 'Ivy' Iverson at the Salem Lutheran Church. They made their home in Osakis and have been happily married here for over 56 years.
Jim was a very active member of the Osakis Lutheran Church. He held all of the Church board offices, in addition to teaching Sunday School, religious education and confirmation classes. He was a charter member of the Osakis VFW and belonged to the Masons and the Shriners. Jim was a charter member of the Osakis Country Club as well, and was instrumental in helping promote Club stock purchases. He served 23 years on the Osakis City Council and was a member of the Minnesota Banker's Assoc. for 58 years. Besides his civic contributions, Jim also enjoyed bowling, traveling, coin collecting and reading. In his younger days, he played town baseball for Osakis and Fergus Falls and was an active golfer for many years.
Jim is survived by his wife, Lorraine 'Ivy' Nomeland of Osakis; three children and their spouses, Debra (Allen) Larson of Alexandria, Steven (Brenda) Nomeland of Chamberlain, SD, Karen (Brian) Hopps of Minneapolis; 6 grandchildren, Tera, Nicholas & Carrie Larson, Audrey, Leif and Lili Nomeland; several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents, two brothers, Gordon and Allan Nomeland; two sisters, Thelma Crim and Ardis Aga.
Funeral services were held for Jim on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Osakis Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Calvert officiating. Musicians were organist, Pat Converse and vocalists, Myron,Allen, Kurt and Jamie Larson. Interment was at the Salem Lutheran Cemetery with honorary pallbearers Neil Gillis, Neuman and Steve Olson, Bruce Pederson and the staff at the First National Bank of Osakis.
Active bearers were Kevin, Bryan and Jamie Iverson, Nicholas Larson, Leif Nomeland and Drew Rutherford. Military honors were provided by the Osakis VFW Honor Guard.
