LIFE HISTORY for LAURA EARL
Laura Earl, age 94 of Osakis passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Galeon in Osakis where she was a resident.
On September 30, 1922 Heyko and Matta (Oppelt) Duin gave birth to a baby girl in Elkton, South Dakota, that they named Laura Mae. She was raised in South Dakota and as a young woman worked out as a housekeeper. She met Newton Earl, Sr. and they were married on August 12, 1944 in San Francisco, CA. Laura lived and worked in California in the war factories. When they returned from California, they lived in the Sioux Falls, SD area, farming near Hudson, SD. They then moved to a farm south of Osakis, MN in 1956 and continued dairy farming north of Osakis, then moved to Eagle Bend where they farmed until 1966, moving to King City, CA for eight years until returning to live and farm near Osakis. Laura helped in raising dairy cattle and also did home health care for several handicapped and homebound residents. After their retirement, they first moved to Pipestone, MN, then to Walnut Grove. After Newton's passing in 1998, Laura moved to Spicer, MN and then returned to live in Osakis, MN.
Laura was a member of Sauk Valley Lutheran Church in rural Osakis. She enjoyed staying active and loved the outdoors. She also enjoyed crocheting, cooking and was an excellent horseback-rider in her younger years, later learning to ride motorcycle. She was light on her feet on the dance floor and was a big fan of the Minnesota sports teams.
She is survived by her children, Gloria (Marlin) Hadden of Borup, MN, Carol Swanson of Walnut Grove, Newton (Ginny) Earl, Jr. of Osakis; 17 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren and 10 great, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, Newton Earl, Sr., a son, Leslie Earl, a grandson, Terry Hadden; son-in-law, John Swanson; 5 sisters, Mable Klitzke, Wilma Meyer, Margarete and Henrietta Hegerfeld, Katherine Fiihr,; 2 brothers, Melvin and Fred Duin.
Funeral services for Laura will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Sauk Valley Lutheran Church in rural Osakis with Rev. Steve Hilde officiating. Interment is at the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at the church one hour prior to the service. Casketbearers are Audray (Earl) Maxwell, Kenneth Earl, Curt Earl, John Mostad, Irvin & Kenneth Frie
