LIFE HISTORY for LEE HOLDER
Lee Holder, age 91 of Osakis died Friday, November 9, 2007 at the Community Memorial Home in Osakis.
Leland "Lee" Holder was born on September 30, 1916 in Emmetsburg, Iowa to Addison and Mabel (Rhinehart) Holder. He moved with his family to the Osakis area and was a graduate of Osakis High School. Lee worked with the C.C.C. (Civil Conservation Corp) as a young man. He married Arline Baker on February 15, 1938. The Holder's dairy and crop farmed for many years south of Osakis. Lee retired in 1976 and then moved to Sierra Blanca, TX. He returned to live in Osakis and had been a resident of the Community Memorial Home since 2002.
Lee was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Orange Township board, the District 97 school board and the National Farmers Organization. He was an avid horseman and also enjoyed hunting each fall, especially his trips to Canada. Cribbage games and snowmobiling were winter past times he enjoyed. Lee had a flair for writing poetry and also enjoyed reading Western novels. While in Texas he learned the art of cactus gardening and he also enjoyed going dancing, as he loved to listen to music.
Lee is survived by his children, Phyllis (Roger) Sorenson of Osakis, Karren Hakel of Fairbanks, AK, Larry (Dorothy) Holder of Eagle Bend, David (Deb) Holder of Richmond, Jack (Polly) Holder of Osakis and Deborah (Eric) Stelling of Sauk Centre; 23 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; a sister, Sheila "Betty" Jones of Midland, TX; many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Roger and a daughter, Mechelle; 3 grandchildren, Brian Holder, Bradley and Rodney Hakel; a son-in-law, Henry Hakel; 4 brothers, Keith, Ralph, Milo and Orlo Holder; 3 sisters, Vera Picha, Gwen Chapman and Doris Braaten.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 2:00 pm at the Osakis Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Calvert officiating. Musicians were Pat Converse and Anna Pastian. A special poem written in memory of Lee by Roger Sorenson was read and a eulogy was given by his son, David Holder. Honorary bearers were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A lunch was served after the service in the fellowship hall and was provided by the church women.
Arrangements are handled by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis, MN.
