Boyd was born in Osakis, MN to Floyd and Vera Berry on September 18, 1931. While growing up, he lived in the Clotho area and attended school in Long Prairie, MN.

On July 6, 1957, Boyd married his sweetheart, Devona Peterson. They were the 3rd generation to continue on the family farm and received many quality awards from Kraft Foods.
In addition to farming and raising his family, Boyd was active on the Leslie Township Board, the Clotho Creamery board, and various insurance boards for many years. He was also a proud member of the American Legion in Long Prairie.
