Velma Bjorstrom, age 93 of Osakis passed away on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Galeon in Osakis, MN.
She was born on September 14, 1927 in Kandota Township, Todd Co., to Otto and Hazel (Hart) Samuelson. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on September 2, 1928 in Calvary Lutheran Church in Little Sauk, MN. Velma lived with her family on a farm and attended country school through the 8th grade in District # 49. As a freshman, she went one year to Sauk Centre High School before moving with her family to a farm near Bertha, MN, graduating from Bertha High School in 1944. The following year she was married to Raymond Bjorstrom (who was from Little Sauk Township) on Dec. 15, 1945 in Bertha, MN. They both worked in Long Prairie for a couple of years before spending 6 months in Tucson, AZ near her parents. They returned to live on a farm near Fairy Lake and then in 1950 were able to buy a farm in Little Sauk Township. They raised two sons there and belonged to the Little Sauk Long Bridge Church where Velma helped as a Sunday School teacher and held various offices in the Ladies Aide. When the Community Memorial Home opened in Osakis, Velma worked there for eleven years. In 2005 when the farm was sold, they moved into Osakis, MN. Velma’s greatest enjoyment was being with her family and helping with the grandchildren. She also enjoyed embroidery, reading, gardening, flowers and keeping up the lawn.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Arlan & Cindy Bjorstrom of Long Prairie; 5 grandchildren, Jacob (Yuri) Bjorstrom, Chad (Hillary) Bjorstrom, Sarah (Warren Cotch) Bjorstrom, Tyler Bjorstrom, Bobbi Jo (Kurt) Haakinson; 7 great, grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Vicki Bjorstrom, sisters-in-law, Delores Samuelson, Dorothy Bjorstrom; brother-in-law, Gary Bjorstrom and nieces and nephews. Velma is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond, and a son, Larry Bjorstrom, brother, Marvin Samuelson, sister, Gladys Samuelson and a brother-in-law, Alden Bjorstrom.
A family graveside service will be held at Long Bridge Lutheran Cemetery of Little Sauk, MN.
