FUNERAL NOTICE FOR VIOLETTE GAYKEN
Violette Gayken, age 89 of Osakis passed away on Monday, July 27 at her son's lake home in rural Osakis. Memorial services will be held on Friday, July 31 at 11:00 am at the Osakis Lutheran Church. A gathering time begins one hour prior to the service at the church.
LIFE HISTORY FOR VIOLETTE GAYKEN
Violette Marie Spletter was born on August 6, 1925 in Willmar, MN to Evald and Frieda (Enzenauer) Spletter. She owned and operated a tavern in Murdock, MN and then in Winstead, while also raising a daughter and twin sons. In the late '60's, Violette moved to Hopkins and opened an antique store called "Vie's Antiques." She was a savy dealer and enjoyed matching treasures to new owners. She then worked at the downtown YMCA for several years as a resident manager. Upon retirement, Vie moved into her son's home on Lake Osakis and enjoyed the small town atmosphere. She loved to get out on the lake, do some fishing and take leisurely boat rides. Besides crocheting and working in the garden, she also enjoyed playing weekly Bingo. Vie never tired of going antique shopping or browsing through estate or garage sales. She was a doting grandma to her five grandchildren and was always happy to babysit whenever the opportunity arose. She was a member of the Osakis Lutheran Church.
Violette is survived by her sons, Lydell Gayken of Osakis and Lynell (Kathy) Gayken of Alexandria; 5 grandchildren, Anthony, Andrew, Jacqueline, Alexander and Joscelyn; a son-in-law, Joel James of Boulder, CO and a brother, Bud (Tootie) Spletter of New London, MN; many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Lana Rae James, her brothers, Henry and Walter Spletter and sisters, Alvina Gayken and Helen Hubel.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Osakis Lutheran Church with Rev. Rich Fitzer officiating. Organist is Pat Converse.
